This is a not-comprehensive example of the Campaign Season in Commonwealth. Most of these procedures are “on autopilot.” It is obviously influenced by Classic Traveller’s character creation procedures from High Guard and Mercenary.
Decision making is limited. Civilians will decide whether they support or disdain the war which determines the Campaign Outlook. Then, characters who are deployed with their regiments can weigh the chances of success on their assignment, and decide how brave or cowardly they wish to be.
Ultran is S2, has 30c, an F7, and one trust. Ultran holds no military titles and is not a member of any regiment, and qualifies as a “Civilian.”
Hastur is S4 with Fighting Skill 1, is a member of the Contarii, and holds the Hetman of the Contarii title.
Hastur might be deployed, so he can’t pick a civilian action. Ultran has a trust and a lot of chrisos, and they choose Arms Dealing as their civilian activity. They use all of their wealth to create three additional trusts and commit all four of their trusts to the war effort.
Since all of the Civilians took pro-War activities, the campaign outlook is Excellent.
2d6 is thrown for each regiment. The Dimarchi, the Hastarii, and the Jezail are deployed. Ultran, having no love for Hastur, spends their F7 to force the Contarii to deploy.
Four regiments deployed, so Ultran receives 20c for each trust committed to Arms Dealing, collecting 80c.
The Contarii’s assignment roll is 5, so their assignment is Battle.
The campaign outlook is Excellent, so Hastur gains a +2 bonus to Survival. The Survival target for Battle is 7+. Hastur chooses to act with Reckless Bravery and increase the target number by 2 to 9+.
Hastur rolls 2d6 and gets a 5, and adds his fighting skill (1) and campaign outlook bonus (2) for a total of 8. Hastur has missed the survival roll by 1, and is dismembered. He rolls a 2d6 on the Dismemberment table and gets 7, losing a hand, and taking -2 to Fighting Skill. Because of the dismemberment, Hastur is immediately awarded the Order of the Rosa Litora.
Hastur technically survived and can proceed to Decoration. The decoration target for Battle is 5+.
Hastur rolls 2d6 and gets 7, adding 2 for his Reckless Bravery, for a total of 9. This exceeds the decoration target by 4, so Hastur is awarded the Order of the Heptagonal Barque! Because he has earned at least one medal, he will receive an extra roll on the rewards table.
But first, it’s time for Promotion. The promotion target for Battle is 7+.
Hastur rolls 2d6 and gets 5, adding 2 for Reckless Bravery, for a total of 7. He attains S5, above the Station limit for the Contarii. Because he was promoted, he will recieve an extra roll on the rewards table.
Finally, it’s time for rewards. The reward target for Battle is 5+. Hastur throws 2d6 and gets 4, bad luck. However he still has two rolls from Decoration and Promotion.
Hastur rolls 1d6 twice on Battle’s reward table, getting a 1 and a 6. Hastur’s Fighting Skill immediately increases by 1, and he receives an F5.
Hastur was dismembered and he exceeded the station limit for the Contarii. He loses his membership, being discharged honorably in order to convalasce. He is also unable to rejoin the Contarii because of his station. However, since he still holds the Hetman title, he may be redeployed with the Contarii.
Hastur was dismembered and did not succeed at the survival throw. Therefore the war had High Casualties (1 casualty > 0 survivors).
Hastur was decorated and promoted. Therefore the war is considered a Victory (2 decorations and promotions > 1 character living).
Because the war also had High Casualties, Victory is increased to Total Victory. Income is doubled for the next 3 months and the holdings market is emptied out.
Hastur was promoted and is likely below his minimum holdings value. Thankfully, he’ll be flush with income - perfect for buying a prosthetic, raising a militia, and taking revenge on Ultran.
